Cilaos Embroidery Centre

Interesting
The Maison de la Broderie displays the traditional openwork embroidery produced in Cilaos. This meticulous craft was introduced in the cirque by Angèle Mac-Auliffe, a doctor's daughter, and the technique, which consists of drawing threads from the fabric to create an openwork pattern, was passed on from generation to generation. The price of embroidered items reflects the time required to make them: as an example, a bed sheet can take six months and a tablecloth eight!
