The Owl House
Helen Martins (1897-1976), originally from Nieu Bethesda, shut herself up in her workshop for the last 30 years of her life to devote herself to a type of art similar to Art Brut. She created many cement figures and animals, and covered the walls with brightly coloured crushed glass. After going nearly blind, she created hundreds of owl sculptures with the help of Koos Malgas. Fascinated by the Far East, she drew inspiration from texts by Omar Khayam and William Blake, as well as from the Bible.
