The Boer pioneers who came here on the Great Trek had first built Schoemansdal, at the foot of the Soutpansberg. In the 1880s, chased off by Venda warriors, they founded Pietersburg 100km to the south. Its name refers to Pieter Joubert, who won fame during the Anglo-Boer War. As part of the policy of Africanising the names of towns, Pietersburg became Polokwane. Don't miss the region's historic site of Eersteling and the African open-air museum of Bakoni Malapa Northern Sotho.
