Kimberley The Essential
Interesting
At 1.6km in diameter, the "Big Hole" is the world's largest man-made hole. This diamond mine, operated from 1870 to 1914, turned out to be one of the world's most productive. It triggered the growth of the city of Kimberley, the creation of the highly prosperous De Beers mining company and the colossal fortunes of a few people such as Cecil John Rhodes. The site has been turned into a museum village and the town also has some other interesting museums and art galleries.
