The Heard Museum

Highly recommended
Devoted to Native American culture and art, especially Southwest tribes, this fine museum contains 10 exhibition galleries and 32,000 works of art. Arches, colonnades and courtyards are hallmarks of Spanish Colonial architecture. The story of its 1929 founding is told in the Sandra Day O'Connor Gallery. The Kitchell Gallery, near the entrance, provides an orientation to baskets, jewelry, pottery and textiles; the Crossroads Gallery offers contemporary painting and sculpture. The Heard's most impressive gallery, Native Peoples of the Southwest, is undergoing a renovation process that includes moving the Heard Museum North to Scottsdale in 2007. The gallery explores the traditions of Arizona tribes within the context of their unique geographical environs, and incorporates an artist-in-residence program.
