UC Botanical Garden

More than 19,000 plants of more than 9,600 species grace the slopes of Strawberry Canyon in a sylvan setting above the main campus, overlooking the bay. University scientists have nurtured exotic plants collected from the wild since 1890, though this 34-acre site was established in the 1920s. Most of the garden is organized geographically, representing flora of Asia, Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Meso-America, North America and California. Thematic gardens nurture palms and cycads, old roses and Chinese medicinal herbs. A sequoia forest and redwood grove are located across Centennial Drive.
