The Getty Center Los Angeles

Highly recommended
Perched on a north-south ridge high above the San Diego Freeway, a gleaming cluster of low-lying buildings holds one of the nation's most extensive facilities for the study, conservation and presentation of visual art. Collections include French decorative arts; European paintings from the 17C to the 20C, including such well-known works as Rembrandt's St. Bartholomew (1661) and Van Gogh's Irises (1889); and works on paper, encompassing drawings, illuminated manuscripts and photographs. Created to house the organizations of the J. Paul Getty Trust, the 110-acre campus realizes the vision of the trust's founder, one of the 20th century's wealthiest businessmen and a noted collector of art and antiquities. American architect Richard Meier designed the complex, which melds six buildings with courtyards, walkways, fountains, and gardens and affords stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica and the city of Los Angeles. The Central Garden, which boasts 500 plant species and a waterfall, was conceived by artist Robert Irwin. The various branches of the J. Paul Getty Trust, including research and conservation organizations, occupy several of the structures; the phenomenal J. Paul Getty Museum takes the remainder of the complex. Getty's antiquities are housed at the newly refurbished Getty Villa in Malibu.
