University of California, Los Angeles

Interesting
Lodged on a 419-acre shield-shaped campus in the foothills between Westwood Village and Bel Air, UCLA began in 1882 as a state normal school in downtown Los Angeles. Inspired by the hillside setting and the Southern California climate, campus planners in the 1920s designed 40 cinnamon-colored brick and stone buildings in the Lombard Romanesque style of northern Italy, arranged on a system of axes to accommodate the sloping terrain.Today UCLA is the largest member of the University of California's nine-campus system, with a total enrollment of more than 35,000 students and an academic staff of more than 5,000. Crowning the highest point on the campus, Royce Quadrangle is bordered by the university's earliest, Italian-theme structures. The Janss Steps sweep dramatically downhill to the student union and athletic facilities. Near its foot stands Pauley Pavilion, a 12,500-seat arena that is home court to UCLA's acclaimed basketball teams, winners of 13 national college championships since 1964. In the heart of campus, on Westwood Plaza, is the Bruin Bear (1984, Billy Fitzgerald), a 6ft-high, 10ft-long, two-ton bronze statue of a snarling grizzly, the campus symbol.
