Walt Disney Concert Hall

Recommended
Los Angeles' hilltop mecca for the performing arts is an elegant group of three white marble structures and the imposing 2003 Walt Disney Concert Hall, occupying a 10-acre elevated plaza. Home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, the Center Theatre Group and numerous visiting theater, music and dance companies, the complex hosts performances ranging from the traditional to the wildly experimental. An imposing composition of towering windows and columns, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (1964) mounts music, opera and dance productions. Innovative dramatic works are presented at the 752-seat Mark Taper Forum (1967), a low, cylindrical structure framed by a reflecting pool and a detached colonnade. The rectilinear 2,071-seat Ahmanson Theatre (1967) stages plays, musicals, dance concerts and individual performing artists. The Walt Disney Concert Hall (2003) is the home of the L.A. Philharmonic. Designed by avant-garde architect Frank Gehry, the bold and distinctive structure features at its heart a 2,290-seat auditorium with hardwood walls and ceiling and curved stainless-steel exterior of multiple facades.
