Westfield Horton Plaza

With its twisting and turning passageways, multiple ramps and stairways, crazy quilt of architectural styles and dazzling palette of more than 49 pastel colors, the open-air, multilevel, post-Modern shopping center (1985, Jon Jerde) is deliberately designed to disorient visitors, thus encouraging browsing. The 11.5-acre complex encompasses nearly 200 businesses, including major department stores (including Nordstrom and Macy's), specialty shops and restaurants, a 14-screen cinema and two live-performance theaters. Buskers entertain passers-by in its courtyards and plazas. Fronting the entrance on Broadway is the original Horton Plaza, a small park established by Alonzo Horton in 1871; its electric fountain, designed by Irving Gill, was dedicated in 1910.
