San Diego Natural History Museum

Founded in 1874, the San Diego Society of Natural History opened its first museum in 1920 in Casa de Balboa. The present imposing two-story building fronting Plaza de Balboa was finished in 1933. A major renovation in March 2001 more than doubled the museum's floor space to 150,000sq ft and incorporates a spectacular four-story, glass-ceilinged atrium that opens into a 300-seat theater. Many of the museum's collection of more than 7 million specimens are presented in a new permanent exhibit that re-creates a walk across Baja California and San Diego County, from deep ocean through high mountains to low desert. Live animals, state-of-the-art dioramas and computer stations add to the interactive nature of the exhibit. Other displays highlight geology and paleontology. The museum also houses the Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias and the Environmental Science Education Center.
