Presidio Park

Interesting
The foundations of Spanish colonial history in Alta California lie atop this prominent knoll, from which sweeping views extend over San Diego. The beautifully landscaped park features a fine historical museum and archaeological remains of the first European settlement on the West Coast. In 1769 the twin columns of the Sacred Expedition led by Gaspar de Portolá and Father Junipero Serra arrived by land and sea and designated this hill as the site for both mission and presidio. Soldiers built log stockades while Serra met Kumeyaay Indians at the nearby village of Cosoy. Although the mission was relocated in 1774, the Royal Presidio, as it was named that year, remained an active military installation throughout the Spanish period into the Mexican period, and a small settlement was established in the area immediately around the fortress. Upon Mexican independence in 1821, the fortress was abandoned as its occupants moved downhill to establish Old Town.Throughout the first decades of the 20C, San Diego resident George White Marston systematically acquired much of Presidio Hill, landscaping the property with nearly 10,000 shrubs and trees and commissioning the Junípero Serra Museum. Marston presented the park and the museum to the city of San Diego as a gift in 1929.
