Villa Montezuma

Interesting
Erected in 1887, this elaborate mansion was commissioned by wealthy city residents for Jesse Shepard, a popular musician, spiritualist and author who was persuaded to remain in San Diego by the promise of a great home in which to perform and hold salons. Today beautifully restored, it is operated as a house museum by the San Diego Historical Society. The villa's exterior exemplifies the Queen Anne style, with its corner and side towers, windows of various shapes and sizes, and walls covered with a variety of shingle patterns. The interior boasts luxurious woodwork in redwood and walnut, and fine stained-glass windows. Shepard occupied the mansion for two years; it then passed through several owners before being transferred to the city of San Diego.
