San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum

Recommended
Covering 70 acres of rolling terrain, this outstanding botanical collection comprises 6,000 species of plants from all over the world. Arranged around a large, central lawn, its varied gardens shelter secluded benches and gentle pathways that invite lei-surely contemplation. The arboretum emphasizes regions of Mediterranean climate, with significant collections from California, the Cape Province of South Africa, southwestern Australia and Chile. Other attractions include a hillside garden of succulents; the New World Cloud Forest, where special mist emitters supplement the San Francisco fog; the verdant Redwood Nature Trail; the Primitive Plant Garden of moss, lichen, cycads, horsetails, tree ferns and conifers; and the Moon-Viewing Garden, where East Asian plants grow around a reflecting pond in a landscape inspired by classical Chinese and Japanese principles. The adjacent Garden of Fragrances and Biblical Garden share a handsome retaining wall built of stones removed from a medieval Spanish monastery purchased by William Randolph Hearst, who had it dismantled and shipped to Golden Gate Park for reassembly. Housed in the County Fair Building to the west of the Arbo-retum's main entrance, the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture (open daily year-round 10am-4pm; closed major holidays) has more than 27,000 books and 450 plant and garden periodicals and presents quarterly exhibits of botanical prints and other art.
