AT&T Park

Recommended
Many baseball insiders consider San Francisco's major-league stadium to be the finest in the world. Opened in April 2000, it couples the mood of an early-20C urban ballpark, such as Boston's Fenway Park or Chicago's Wrigley Field, with modern amenities. HOK Sport designed the 40,800-seat stadium to shield players and spectators from wind and fog; the field level slopes gently upward from the playing surface. From upper-level tiers, spectacular views extend to the city skyline, the Bay Bridge and Oakland beyond. The park's main entrance is at 24 Willie Mays Plaza, where a red-brick façade rises behind William Behrends' 9ft bronze statue of the Hall of Fame outfielder, who wore the number 24 throughout his playing career (1951-73). The Coca-Cola Fan Lot, above the left-field bleachers, features pop-bottle slides, a wiffleball field, speed-pitching and baserunning areas, and the world's largest baseball glove, a huge sculpture of an old-time three-finger mitt. Behind the right-field wall, rare home runs may splash into McCovey Cove (named for another Hall of Fame Willie) a finger of China Basin where they are fished out by ardent boaters or by a team of Portuguese water dogs sponsored by comedian Father Guido Sarducci.
