Cantor Arts Center

This university museum houses a dazzling, eclectic collection of 20,000 pieces of ancient to contemporary sculpture, paintings, crafts and ceremonial artworks from Africa, Oceania, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Noted for its cultivated eclecticism, it is renowned for its ambitious collection of Rodin sculptures, the largest in the world outside of Paris. Designed by Venetian artist Antonio Paoletti, the 13 mosaics across the front facade of the original building illustrate the pro-gress of civilization through learning and arts. Three pairs of massive entry doors, each weighing 600 pounds, are encased in bronze panels depicting examples of ancient architecture. The two-story entry hall, clad in marble and with floors of terrazzo, is presided over by a statue of Athena. Flanking the entrance, the two original wings exhibit the Classical, historical and international collections, while the new addition-behind the entry hall-houses contemporary art and rotating exhibits. Two courtyards are devoted to sculpture.
