El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park

Enveloped by the bustle of modern Santa Barbara, this reconstructed Spanish fortress, which once covered an area equivalent to a square city block, formed the earliest nucleus of the city. Completed by 1788, the presidio served as the region's military and government headquarters. Today the only original structures are the soldiers' residences (c.1788), known as El Cuartel-the oldest building in Santa Barbara-and the Ca±edo Adobe, now housing a visitor center and displays relating to the site's history. Flanked by the padres' and the comandantes' quarters, the chapel was rebuilt according to existing records with handmade adobe blocks. In 2006 work to restore the north side of the fort to its original appearance was nearly complete.
