Robert Gould Shaw Memorial

This memorial honors the leader, Col. Robert Gould Shaw, and members of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, the first regiment of free black volunteers, in the Civil War. Shaw was killed in 1863 during the Union assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina.
