Kit Carson Home and Museum

Interesting
Carson, a famous frontier scout and Indian agent (1809-68), lived in this 1825 house from 1843 until his death. The museum, in a part of the original house, illustrates Carson's career and frontier life of that era through displays featuring guns, clothing, saddles, furniture and period equipment used by mountain men and Indians. In 1918, heiress Mabel Dodge (1879-1962) shocked New York society by buying a Taos adobe and marrying an Indian, Tony Luhan. She quickly became a darling of the counterculture and, as a patron of the arts, helped cement Taos' reputation as an art colony. The Luhans entertained scores of luminati, including D.H. Lawrence, Carl Jung, Willa Cather and Ansel Adams. Actor Dennis Hopper owned the house in the 1970s. A National Historic Landmark since 1991, the Mabel Dodge Luhan House is now a bed-and-breakfast retreat, around a corner from the Carson Home. Next door is the Lumina Gallery, whose two-acre Ridhwan Sculpture Garden is a wildlife habitat with 40 large-scale works.
