At the tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, the hot-spring resort of Ibusuki stands in a splendid natural setting of white-sand beaches and rocky creeks with tropical plants against the backdrop of Kaimon-dake, a volcano, which, with its perfect lines, is reminiscent of Mt Fuji. Not far away the transparent waters of the vast Lake Ikeda shimmer; the lake was formed when a caldera collapsed, and is now home to a huge eel population. In Ibusuki, don't miss the Satsuma Denshokan Museum and its sumptuous porcelain collection.
