Bulguk-sa, completed in 774, suffered repeated destruction before being partially restored in the 1970s. It is a foremost example of the Buddhist temples constructed in Korea in the Silla Kingdom. Built according to the Lotus sutra, its aim was to recreate the Buddhist ideal on earth in the shape of an eternal palace for Buddha. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
