Kamphaeng Phet The Essential

In 1991, the fortified town built on the banks of the River Ping was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with the forest temples which are hidden among the trees 2km to the north of the town. Occupying an important strategic position, Kamphaeng Phet was one of the capitals of the Sukhothai kingdom under Rama Khamhaeng (1279-98), and enjoyed its golden age in the 14C under Li Thai, as its numerous temples testify. In the modern town which has developed to the southeast, don't miss the night market, where you can taste some of the delicious local specialities made from banana.
