Sukhothai, the first capital of the kingdom of Siam, comprises a superb UNESCO World Heritage Site, best visited early in the morning before the crowds get here, and a lively "new town" which is at its most bustling in the evening when the night market is open. From its golden age, the town has retained almost 200 temples adorned with magnificent statues; the most interesting remains can be seen within the royal enclosure, surrounded by romantic pools dotted with colourful lotus flowers.
