Salvador Cidade Alta

Highly recommended
The Cidade Alta, or upper town, is Salvador's historical centre. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, the area has steep cobbled streets, where many gems are hidden away: churches, museums and several hundred colourful 17C and 18C colonial houses, some of which have been renovated. There is a strong police presence here. Come via the Elevador Lacerda, which is the safer route.
