Tiradentes, with its steep cobbled streets, little river, colonial houses, Baroque churches (the Igreja Matriz de Santo Antônio, with its rich gold decor, is a must-see), has managed to hang onto its charm of old, when the city prospered thanks to the success of the mines of Minas Gerais. Take the steam train to São João del Rei or head off to explore the waterfalls of Serra São José.
