Museu Histórico Nacional of Rio

Highly recommended
Located close to the Praça Âncora, the National History Museum boasts impressive collections which will be of inestimable value to anyone interested in Brazil's history: paintings, imperial carriages, Pedro II's throne, and even the goose feather Isabel used to sign the papers abolishing slavery. Housed in a former 17C fort, the museum is a must-see, especially since a successful renovation has ensured the collections are done full justice.
