Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia
On reaching Higüey, in the distance you will see the astonishing concrete arch of the basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, standing at a height of 80m. Two Frenchmen, A. J. Dunoyer de Segonzac and Pierre Dupré designed the building in 1954. The main altar was installed in 1965, followed in 1968 by the beautiful stained glass created in Chartres. On January 21 1971, the basilica was declared a national monument and has become a major centre of pilgrimage. Its bell tower is one of the highest of Latin America.
