Gmünd in Kärnten The Essential
Gmünd, at the confluence of the Malta and Lieser, once guarded the route from Nuremberg to Venice for the archbishops of Salzburg. The imposing outline of the fortified castle overlooks the small town, which has retained its Medieval appearance and is surrounded by partly-crenellated ramparts. Numerous workshops and galleries line the small alleyways which lead to the Hauptplatz, in the heart of Gmünd, enclosed by the two town gates.
