Geras Abbey, one of the greatest art education centres in Europe, is set near a pleasant 140-ha nature reserve. It was founded in the 12C, but rebuilt in the 17C. However, the abbey church, to which Gothic vaulting and Baroque decoration were added, has retained its original Romanesque character. The finely-decorated Marble Hall includes a masterly ceiling fresco by Paul Troger. The bishop's apartments display precious items from the treasure house.
