Scherpenheuvel The Essential
This is Belgium's hilltop national site venerating the Virgin Mary. The seven-sided basilica, topped by the country's first Baroque dome, was built by Cobergher, from 1609 to 1627, and stands at the centre of a geometrical urban layout, with seven avenues converging on it. A tall tower rises at the back the building. Inside, the radiating chapels display six brightly-coloured paintings by Van Loon, depicting the Lives of St Anne and the Virgin.
