This small, quiet and picturesque Flemish town was once a stronghold protected by powerful walls (14C and 17C) and a cloth-making centre. In 1678, it was ransacked by Louis XIV's troops and its fortifications were demolished in the 18C. Since then, the town has lived in the past, huddled round its fine church.
