Hasselt
Hasselt The Essential
Hasselt lies on the borders of the Kempen and Hesbaye regions. It is a busy town, growing in importance at the same rate as the region's industrial base and boasts a university campus and faculties in the east. Hasselt has been the capital of Belgian Limburg since 1839 and its bishopric, covering the province, was established in 1967. The locally-produced gin is excellent. Hendrik van Veldeke, the first known Dutch-language poet was born in the area in the 12C.
