The Essential
Situated on the River Senne, Soignies grew up round an abbey established around the year 650 by St Vincent Madelgaire, whose memory is honoured on Whit Monday each year with a large procession that follows a 15km route. Composed of narrow winding streets, its four main thoroughfares converge on the collegiate church. The town is an important centre of black limestone quarrying.
