A collection of stately homes

Between Plaza Ancha and Plaza Altamirano stand several refined and elegant residences: an impressive 16C building that was once home to the Cano Saldaña, and the houses of the wealthy Enrique Grivegnée and of Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-1894), the engineer who built the Suez Canal and provoked the Panama Scandal (Lesseps was Andalusian on his mother's side, and what is more, Catherine de Grivegnée, his mother, was related to Eugénie de Montijo, future wife of Napoleon III: it's a small world!).
