Kemijärvi occupies a charming site at a bend in the River Kemijoki which slackens at this point, its gentle waters encircling the little town. It is the departure point for numerous walks and excursions. The fascinating wild regions of Salla and Savukoski extend towards the mountains and marshes of the northeast. The Pyhätunturi National Park mainly comprises a chain of craggy mountains, with ancient sites that were sacred to the Sami. Straddling the polar circle, Suomutunturi, or Mt Suomu, is one of the largest winter sports resorts.
