Varkaus The Essential
Interesting
An information technology and high-tech industry hub, the town grew up in the 19C close to rapids and vast forests, at a crossroads of waterways used for shipping wood. Some of its industrial buildings are Modernist gems. The Lutheran church (1939) designed by Martti Paalanen is a rare example of a Functionalist ecclesiastical building with Classical echoes. A 240m2 fresco, Thy Kingdom Come (1954), adorns the altar wall. Music lovers will want to see the Museum of Mechanical Music.
