When to go
Your own interests will come into play as you choose what time of year to visit the Alps.
If you're a die-hard ski enthusiast then winter is the time for you: the Alps won't disappoint, either with their snow cover or the generally blue skies. And you will have earned the raclette you tuck into afterwards!
If you prefer hiking or mountain biking, then spring, which is mild in the southern Alps, or the period between the start of July and mid-August if heading to the northern Alps, will be of particular interest for the abundance of flowers in bloom. However, the snow that persists above 2 000m then can make certain routes tricky. Hiking is also recommended in autumn in the southern part of the range, when the surroundings are ablaze with colour and there are fewer tourists.
In summer it is hot and dry in the south, sometimes stormy in the north, and always cool at high altitude, with a number of villages and resorts pulling out all the stops to indulge their summer holidaymakers.
