Statue of Jean-Charles de Borda

Born in 1733, Charles de Borda was an engineer, surveyor and mathematician; he made tremendous progress in nautical calculations and, as a member of the commission set up under the Constituent Assembly to introduce the metric system, measured the length of the arc of the meridian from Dunkirk to Barcelona.
