Mont-de-Marsan
Mont-de-Marsan The Essential
Discreet Mont-de-Marsan lives a quiet life out of the limelight in its administrative role of capital of the Landes. But over the past few years it has been transforming itself with a series of renovation and construction campaigns. The town centre, the former barracks (Caserne Bosquet) and the banks of the Midou and the Douze - the rivers which meet here to form the Midouze - have already had a facelift, making for pleasant walks in this former bastide (walled town) founded in 1114 by the Viscount of Marsan at the foot of the St-Pierre-du-Mont parish. Its mild climate means palm trees, magnolias and rose bays grow here, and the scent of the pine forests is omnipresent.
