Saint-Jean-de-Luz The Essential
Recommended
This town of wealthy shipbuilders was once known for its highly skilled privateers, nearly as famous as their neighbours from St. Malo! Right on the ocean, with a superb bay, it was destined to be caught up in the society whirlwind that started in Biarritz in the 1850s. Seaside villas sprung up next to Basque houses with painted wood façades, large shipbuilder's homes and 17C palaces. Today this attractive blend of styles is the ideal setting for a relaxing time on the beach or a stroll around the little fishing port.
