Vic-le-Comte, today the seat of the canton, was once the capital of the County of Auvergne, ruled in turn by John Stuart, Catherine de Medici, then the famous Queen Margot until 1606. The fortified town boasts beautiful houses built of light arkose sandstone and many religious monuments, including the Sainte-Chapelle, a fine Gothic chapel heralding the Renaissance (it has a remarkable altarpiece and stained-glass windows). Don't miss the nearby Château de Busséol and its astonishing hanging garden.
