When to go
In terms of openings, the tourist season runs from April to October (certain châteaux are even open all year round). As for weather conditions, the whole Loire Valley enjoys a mild climate, the "douceur angevine" in all seasons, even winter.
Go in May-June to witness the explosion of colours in the flower gardens and numerous plant festivals, where roses are often the stars of the show. Don't miss the exceptional Chaumont-sur-Loire international garden festival (April to October). Early autumn remains a time you might consider visiting, when the châteaux are set against the gold and brown hues of the forests.
In summer, the light wind of Galerne clears the sky, temperatures remain mild and the sunsets over the Loire are memorable. In July and August, street performances, markets and medieval fairs draw the crowds, and lots of the châteaux open in the evenings for dramatised or sound and light shows.
