Cathedral

Highly recommended
4,000 sculpted people, 5,000 in the stained glass windows, built following the fire which ravaged the previous building in 1194, teeming with details, such that a single visit, no matter, how long can only give a brief overview! The two tall spires and the Royal doorway make up one of the most attractive examples of French religious art. The doorway is a marvel of Romanesque art where the faces are animated intensely with life. Note also the North doorway, the severity of the flying buttresses of the chevet before entering this huge church bathed in semi-darkness. You will be struck by the marvellous decorated windows dominated by the famous «Chartres blue» as clear as it is deep. It is impossible to detail everything here but you should not miss admiring the Notre-Dame-de-la-Belle-Verrière, spared by the fire in 1194and which plays with a whole range of blues. Do not neglect the other riches of the Cathedral, such as the enclosure for the chancel begun by Jean de Beauce where 41 sculpted groups illustrate the lives of Christ and of the Virgin, the crypt with its radiant chapels, the saints-fort well, with doubt Gallo-roman in origin, which is 33 m deep or furthermore the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Sous-Terre...Unless you prefer to absorb the height and, at the top of 195 steps visit the lower gallery of the new clock tower where a whole host of statues gargoyles await you.
