Langres The Essential
Recommended
Perched at 500m, atop a rocky spur, Langres is a real acropolis, and has the largest fortified surrounding wall in Europe. Hidden behind its kilometres of ramparts punctuated by towers and gates, this lovely village, which escaped the last three wars unscathed, is testament to 17 centuries of history. The urban centre, where Diderot was born, has winding roads and passages lined with limestone buildings.
