Since 1975 the Prefecture of the Haute-Corse, Bastia is also the largest business town on the island and has preserved a typically Mediterranean appearance. The town is worth visiting for the quality of its monuments and the picturesque streets in the old town, made up of Terra-Vecchia with its old alleyways and Terra-Nova, the Citadel These are spread out around the old port where the Genoese governor Leonello Lomellini chose to establish a bastiglia or stronghold in 1380.
