Barbizon The Essential
Recommended
Not far from the Fontainebleau forest, until the 19th Century Barbizon was nothing more than an unpretentious little hamlet. But then the village swiftly became a favourite with landscape painters like Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, founders of the famous Barbizon school. Along the Rue Grande galleries and gastronomic restaurants have found a home and nowadays draw a clientèle from Paris and abroad, of those seeking peace and a nostalgic atmosphere.
