Château de Vincennes

Recommended
The building has two distinct sides: a proud and austere - and magnificently restored - 14C keep, with crenellated walls and machicolations still intact, and a majestic 17C section with a royal courtyard and chapel. The kitchens used to be on the ground floor of the keep and the two upper storeys housed the apartments of the king of France. In the 16C the castle became a State prison, mainly for incarcerating political prisoners, including the Great Condé, the Prince of Conti, Cardinal of Retz, Diderot and Mirabeau. It was here that by order of Louis XIV, D'Artagnan guarded Fouquet, on his arrest in 1662.
