Martyrium

The martyrium, which was replaced by a chapel, recalls the martyrdom of St Denis and his companions. In the 16C Ignacio de Loyola and his six companions, including Francisco de Javier, founded the Company of Jesus, recognised as a religious order by Pope Paul III in 1540.
