Next to the palace, the town of Versailles forms a unique whole, devised to house the courtiers who did not want to be far from the king. The three large avenues converging towards the palace were laid out to optimise sunlight. Today the charm of the place lies in its distinctive façades, its examples of Classical and Baroque architecture, and its unevenly cobbled little streets that still echo its royal past.
Created in 1670, the Grand Canal is
