Carcassonne
The Essential
Highly recommended
Simply stunning! How can one not admire this city that imposes itself immediately on the wine-growing plain, and behind which the Corbières form a backdrop? Hard luck for Viollet-le-Duc's critics, who think he was not faithful to history when he restored the old walled city of Carcassonne. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997, it leaves an impression on all who tread the narrow little streets of the medieval city within the proctective embrace of its impressive double surrounding walls.
